Apple store says that my imac has a dead hard drive. It will only power up as far as the apple icon on the grey screen. Didn't give us much hope on retrieving info from the hard drive. Is there any way to retrieve this data? I'm desperate!

Have you tried booting from the installation disc and running Disk Utility to repair your hard drive? Another option would be booting from the Disk Warrior CD and seeing if it can repair your hard drive.

If your Mac is compatible then you may be able to access your data for backup using Firewire Target Disc Mode.
