Airport Ex. in Italy with Telecom/Alice

First off, I'm no genius
Having trouble setting up Airport with new MacBook in Italy. My "station" comes up as Alice with some numbers but appears with a closed "lock." My adsl is with Telecom/Alice and they tell me that I need a wireless modem from them. Isn't that what the Airport is?
