No Space with Music

Hi there, i own a Macbook White with 80GB Hard Drive, now i also own a 500GB External Hard Drive, the thing is, i only have 15GB of HD space left on my mac and itunes takes up 16GB of it, i want to know, can i move all my songs to my external hard drive and still use itunes some how? But the thing is, i don't want to have to turn on my External HD everytime i want to listen to a song. Also, if im not at home i want to be able to access my songs. Is there Any way?
