is there any way to check what extras are running such as menu extras,
drop down extras, etc? i think one of them is incompatable with
panther causing it to quit apps as they start.

Process Viewer in your Applications/Utilities folder. But you'll find
lots of things running, and a lot of them should be running.

You could also generate a System Profiler report and look for
Extensions.

I know ASM and Default Folder both need to be updated for Panther (that
is, you need to download the latest version -- the developer has
updated them).
