third gen. ipod in disk mode, not in itunes, unable to reset or restore

hi there,

my 40gb third generation ipod is currently in disk mode and connected to my computer. it says ok to disconnect but it is not showing up in itunes OR windows. i have tried resetting it only to have the screen switch from the apple logo to the folder with the exclamation mark. since it is not recognized by itunes i can't restore it either. i have tried everything on apple's support to no avail. i'm thinking it's a hard drive malfunction, but i wanted to make sure. my only options seem to be either to repair it for over $100 or buy a new one unless i'm wrong about the hard drive... any help would be much appreciated. thanks!
