change the alias suffix

is there a way --or a way to hack ---in Leopard to change the suffix "alias" (when you create an alias) to one of your own choosing?

Get Info on the Alias and under Name and Extension, remove it.

No, I know that. What I want is a hack to the system so that when I create an alias instead of creating "filename.alias" it creates, as an example, "filename.∆"
