Macbook won't boot up properly due to full harddisk

Hi,

My macbook using OS X won't boot properly due to the startup disk being full. Because it won't start up properly I can't delete data to empty it.

The only thing I can access after starting the computer is recent documents and system preferences.

How can I fix this?
