Can't you charge the iPad/iPhone from the USB socket at the same time as
you're charging the Air?

I may be wrong here but in my experience, if the computer sleeps it
stops charging through the USB socket.
That's what happened to me one night on holiday recently.
Woke to a charged MBP and a still flat iPhone.

Shouldn't happen - I think all my Intel Macs respond to the presence
of an iThing by keeping the port in use live during sleep. Other stuff
won't get that benefit so won't charge, but Apply fondleslabs do.

Just checked and my 1st gen Air, 2009 iMac and 2009 MBP all behave
that way. The laptops do this while asleep too - take a sleeping
closed laptop on mains power, plug an iPhone in, it'll wake for a few
seconds, start charging the iPhone, and go back to sleep with the
iPhone still charging.

Cheers - Jaimie

I just checked. My Air works this way, but my iBook doesn't.

Of course if you've got an air, the USB socket may be in use for other
stuff, or, if there is two of you and want to be more than 3 foot
apart...

Last time I went away took so many electrical devices I took a 4 gang
extention lead though.
