Adding text to end of .txt file

I would like to be able to create an automator action that would open a selected txt file and go to the bottom of the file and insert the date, viz.

2006-10-31

and perhaps position the cursor after that line.


I can find no way to open a file, scroll to the bottom, or append a date.
How does one create such actions?
