Series of disconnect/reconnects during sync

My iPhone 3G is exhibiting some strange behavior. Twice in the last
three days,
I went to sync it and it began to rapidly disconnect and reconnect -
with the
phone and computer making noises like I was pulling and reinserting
the cable over and over. The sync could not proceed.

In both cases, a hard reset fixed it, but I'm worried this may be some
hardware death spiral. Has anyone seen it before?

BTW, same iPhone 3G, two different computers and cables.

I've seen this happen with a Gryphon cable, both with my iPhone and
with an iPod. It seems to make a poor connection (mostly with the
iPod).

My 3GS has started doing the same thing, since the new iTunes update.

That was my first thought, but one of the computers hasn't been
updated yet.

_Might_ be coincidence that something else happened. I kept finding
little bits of fluff in my connector, way inside. The only way I could
remove them without opening the case was to use two jeweler's
screwdrivers like chopsticks. I thought I had a manufacturing defect,
until I figured out it was pocket lint and started putting it in my
pocket upside down.

Interesting thing was that sometimes it was so far in that it did look
like it was coming from inside.
