Mail error message

Hi. I'm new to this site and decided to try it to see if I could find an answer to my problem; I have purchased a domain and hosting space on Domain Registry of Canada/America and I am trying to set up a client account in Mac Mail to receive email from that domain.When I am setting up the account in Mail, I keep getting the message that "The POP server "pop.mydomain.com" is not responding. Try checking the network connection and that the server name is correct. Otherwise the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue you might not be able to receive messages."
I have tried all kinds of different things but been unsuccessful. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

this does not normally include a Mail Server.
