Two questions re Outlook 2011

1. Every now and then, when you hit Send/Receive it will download not only previously un-downloaded messages from the server, but the entire contents of the server inbox, whether previously downloaded or not. (Entourage 2004 used to do this too.) Short of constantly cleaning out the server, is there any way to prevent this?

2. Is there any way to go to unread messages in the Outlook inbox, or to show only unread messages? If there is I can't find it, and Help is useless.
