Startup disk memory?

My computer is saying "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory" meanwhile I have 317.45 GB available (out of 499.76 GB capacity). What gives?

In Word??? its a bug in Word.

Hmm, It happens even if the only programs open are finder and safari. I haven't had word open in a while.

Have you given it a Restart? Apple Menu.

Thats not the standard Out of HD message, strange.

What Mac? What OS version?

Yep, tried all the standard stuff - restart, freeing up space, updates, etc it's OS X (10.5). I didn't realize that isn't the standard message. That's odd. It hasn't done it as much today (only twice so far) so hopefully it will go away. Thanks again.

I'd ensure you have a current backup!

Utilities > Disk Utility > Permissions
And reset your P-RAM, Command - Option - P and R, after startup and before chimes, hold for 3 chimes.

And System Preference > Security > Use Secure Virtual Memory unTicked
