Software update won't allow installs or recognise .pkg or .mpkg files

I’m running 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro 2x2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 8gb of ram.

I’ve just done a software update from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8, but now when I try to install software it doesn’t recognise .pkg or .mpkg files (see attached photos).

It was working fine and installing software up until this software update.

Anybody have idea what might have caused this, or have you experienced it before?
