itunes install not working!

Please forgive me if someone has asked this already, I searched, but could find it. I am having trouble downloading my update 10.5 to itunes. It says must close itunes to update, however it is closed. Does anyone know why, and what I can do to fix this problem?

Try rebooting and using the "Software Update" under the Apple menu.

I have already tried that and it doesn't seem to work!

In Activity Monitor look for the iTunes helper, force quit that and run the installer.
