OS X Version 10.5.8 says no new update

Per Apple I need Snow Leopard version 10.6.1 to install Lion. My Mac says I have OS X version 10.5.8 and when I update it says there are no updates. How can I update to 10.6.1 or later and subsequently to Lion?
