Checking/unchecking tunes

With my new Nano (5th gen) I am unable to download only checked tunes to it. I can download genres, albums, groups (that's a lot to check off) but not the individual songs.
Any suggestion, other than get a bigger ipod? Thanks.

This is with the latest itunes software
