Incorrect self-assigned IP address

I'm trying to use Airport to connect to the wireless network in my house. When I open Network Preferences and use DHCP to select an IP address, Airport shows a detected network but says that it has a "self-assigned IP address of XXX.XXX.XXX.XX and will not be able to connect to the internet". Any suggestions?
