itunes updating

I just received a new ipod shuffle. when I try to sync it to my ibook G4/10.4.11, it tells me I need to update itunes. When I go to "search for updates" it tells me that all of my software is up to date.

I cannot load any music onto the shuffle? Has this happened to anyone else?
