Help my imac 1.83ghz won't start!

I just bought a new imac which is awesome but when I went to turn on my old imac it sounds like it will start but then the power light just flashes brightly and constantly, the screen stays black and it seems as if the keyboard/mouse aren't registering. It almost seems like it's asleep but i can't get it to do anything, I really need files on this comp so any help would be greatly appreciated,
