Finder Color Labels Troubleshooting

I have been using the color labels in finder in files on a shared drive. I have been trying to change which file is labeled each week, but the function to let me remove a color label does not seem to work. I will highlight the colored label, go to label, and then x out. The color label will go away but will come back very soon after. I imagine this is because the file is in a shared folder and so needs to be somehow changed on all the computers. What am I doing wrong?
