MacBook starts & then nothing ?!?

Firstly as the username suggests I know very little about MacBooks.

I used the internet last night on my macbook (bought Christmas 2008) & it was working fine, It shut down correctly when I was finished. Then this morning I turned It on, as normal the grey screen appears but then nothing, it didn't even get as far as the apple logo appearing.

Any help would be very appreciated.
