Transferring Data from OS 8 to OS X

Hello everybody. My family has an old iMac. I don't know the actual model name, but it is one of the fruit Desktop models. It runs OS 8.5.1. Yeah, its old.

Anyway, my parents have documents they want off of it and were hoping their computer science majoring son can help them out. But I'm stuck. I've tried a could different CD, it didn't recognize a CD-RW and told me a CD-R was locked. USB keys are a no go, and there is no internet connection so I can upload anything anywhere.

And even if I can get the folder of mostly documents, I don't know if anything I have can read AppleWorks 5 (wtf is that) documents. Thanks for the help.

An old zip drive might do it, if you can get hold of one.
